SYSTEM SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONSD. SPEED RESTRICTIONS—TRAINS |
|
Restrictions must be respected when operating on any foreign railroad except when their requirements are more restrictive. Restrictions do not apply to foreign railroads operating on John Galt Line trackage. |
|
1. |
Unless otherwise specified, the maximum speed for movements against the current of traffic are the same as those specified for movements with the current of traffic up to a maximum speed of 59 MPH for passenger trains and 49 MPH for freight trains. |
2. |
The tons per operative brake (TPOB) as shown on the train mass profile graph will be used to calculate the maximum speed of train. If train mass profile graph is unavailable, the TPOB of a train will be computed by dividing the trailing tonnage by the total number of cars in train. In determining the number of cars in train:
|
3. | The following table is to be used to determine the maximum allowable freight train speed, taking into account the train’s tons per operative brake: |
Tons Per Operative Brake TPOB |
Maximum Speed |
Below 100 | 60 MPH |
100 to 115 | 50 MPH |
Over 115 | 45 MPH |
4. | Trains handling 25 or more loads of liquid and/or bulk material, each weighing 115 tons or more. | 45 MPH |
(This restriction applies to open top gondolas, covered hoppers and tank cars, AAR types G, LO, and T.)
5. |
Passenger trains are restricted to movements on main tracks, sidings and designated receiving tracks at Passenger Depots only. Movement on any other tracks must be authorized by an Operating Officer. |
|
6. |
Trains handling more than 10 OTTX cars, loaded or empty |
35 MPH |
7. |
When handling more than 10 covered hopper cars (AAR type LO) loaded with grain, coupled consecutively or one or more cars identified on the train mass profile graph with the wording “Be governed by Section D Speed Restrictions—train, Item 7” train or engine must not exceed 12 MPH when operating on:
|
|
8. | Train or equipment speeds specified by rules, special instructions, signal indications, track bulletins or other means must be maintained to the extent feasible, consistent with safety, but must not be exceeded. When there is a difference in the speeds, the lowest speed will govern.
9. |
When computing maximum speed for descending grade restrictions, only the road engine may be used in determining tons per axle of operative dynamic brake. EXCEPTION: When tons per axle of operative dynamic brake exceeds grade restriction speed table thus requiring retainers, operative axles of helper may be added to road engine for computing tons per axle of operative dynamic brake. If revised tons per axle of operative dynamic brake does not exceed table, the setting of retainers is not required. Train must not exceed the most restrictive speed in table.
